girls incThe Omaha Rollergirls are pleased to announce that we have selected Girls Inc. of Omaha as our main fund-raising beneficiary for our 2010 season. Girls Inc. of Omaha is an organization that works to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. There couldn’t be a more perfect match.

Girls Inc. of Omaha is a nonprofit organization that provides vital educational programs for young girls, particularly those in high-risk, under-served areas. Their innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives. Girls Inc develops research-based informal education programs that encourage girls to take risks and master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. Major programs address math and science education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention, and sports participation.

Girls Inc. is very close to the hearts of many Omaha Rollergirls. Many members have had personal experience with Girls Inc., and have benefited from their services. The Omaha Rollergirls are comprised of women ages 18-43, and come from many different walks of life. Careers vary from computer programmers, graphic artists, web developers to accountants, beauticians, social workers and wait staff.

“Our team has a firm belief in building strong character, athleticism and good sportswomanship. We embrace everyone’s differences, and encourage each other to push beyond comfort zones and become the strong, courageous women we are all capable of being.” said league PR Director Jenifer Pirrone a.k.a Soul Crusher Sally. “These values apply not only to our sport, but also to our lives outside of derby. We are very excited about this partnership because it allows us the opportunity to not only support Girls Inc. monetarily but by making a difference in the lives of these young girls by donating our time and sharing our vocational skills.”

The Omaha Rollergirls will be donating a percentage of the money raised from raffles at home bouts to Girls Inc. of Omaha as well as accepting donations online and at various other events throughout the year. “Because of the current economic condition, we’ve seen a lot of families struggling and we do our best to accommodate the girls despite the hardships.” said Roberta Wilhelm, Executive Director of Girls Inc of Omaha. “Support from the community is critical to us. We are grateful that the Omaha Rollergirls are not only supporting Girls Inc. of Omaha, but are also raising awareness.”
