Omaha Junior Roller Derby

It’s More Than Just A Game

It’s a great way to build confidence and self-esteem. It’s an inclusive community. Oh, and it’s a lot of fun too.

OMAHA JUNIOR ROLLER DERBY is a non-profit organization committed to encouraging physical health, teamwork, and the growth of children, ages 8 to 17, in our community.

MISSION:

The mission of Omaha Junior Roller Derby is to establish a program that will help develop character, confidence, and leadership and provide positive social interaction in youths through sports. Our goal is to nurture and develop both skilled athletes and those who have not yet realized the champion inside of them.

OUR PROGRAM:

Omaha Junior Roller Derby (OJRD) began in 2011 and is coached by current and retired skaters of Omaha Roller Derby. OJRD is a co-ed league open to ages 8-17, representing the future of roller derby. All coaches and support staff are volunteers.

OJRD is a proud member of the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA). Skaters are regularly tested on skating skills and the rules of the game and are placed in one of three JRDA-established skill levels: Level 1 (no contact – positional blocking only); Level 2 (JRDA full contact play; no accelerating to hit or block) and Level 3 (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association – level full contact play).

OJRD consists of two teams: Cadets and Commanders. The Cadets are JRDA level 1 and 2 skaters. Cadets’ practices focus on skating skills and basic strategy. The Commanders are JRDA level 3 skaters. The Commanders is our travel team so there is a larger time and financial commitment involved.  Travel expenses for games against other junior leagues across the country will ultimately be up to the family.

We welcome skaters between the ages of 8 and 17 to learn roller derby, leadership, collaboration, and confidence. You don’t need to know how to skate to join, you just have to be willing to give roller derby a try!

We accept all skill levels of skaters. However, we suggest that all incoming skaters can skate one full lap without falling or holding on to something (such as the wall). If your child cannot yet skate a lap, we suggest taking skating lessons before beginning derby. One local resource is Skate City in Bellevue.

JOINING OJRD:

Our season runs from January to December. Similar to year-round school, we have breaks approximately every eight weeks. Skaters are not required to skate every month. We accept new skaters during the first two weeks of each month.

Practices are on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Wednesday practices are from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. Saturday practices are from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.

Skater fees are $40 due each month (Jan-Dec). Fees are due on the second Saturday of each month. Skater registration fees contribute towards the rental of our practice facility, allow us to host home games, and help with other league expenses.

All new skaters need to bring a filled-out enrollment form, a photocopy of the skater’s birth certificate for skater insurance purposes (or another form of legal identification such as their own driver’s license, state ID, military ID, passport, etc,) and a photocopy of their major medical insurance card.

REQUIRED GEAR:

-Quad skates (no inlines)

-A well-fitted, multi-impact helmet

-Elbow pads

-Knee pads

-Wrist guards

-Mouthguard

-Jersey
