Omaha Rollergirls Announce the Start of a Junior Roller Derby League for girls aged 8-18
The Omaha Rollergirls, Omaha’s all-female flat-track roller derby league, are proud to announce the inception of a junior roller derby league. Girls aged 8 – 18 can now register for the first Winter training camp, to run January 2012 through March 2012. The junior skaters will learn skating skills, teamwork and strategy from some of the team members of the Omaha Rollergirls.
Practices and games will be held at the Omaha Rollergirls’ practice facility, located at 9006-I Maple Street twice a week, Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. All level of skaters are welcome, from first-timers to confirmed rink rats. Training will start with basic skating skills and safety, and as the juniors find their skate legs, they will move on to teamwork and strategy.
The Omaha Rollergirls believe that the promotion of an active lifestyle is important and that alternative sporting options should be readily available to not just adult women, but young female athletes as well. “Roller derby as a sport is about being stronger, faster and better,” said Omaha Rollergirls Finance Director Kristel Daly. “The benefit of our sport is it allows a young girl to find her own identity and empowers her in a fun, friendly and tolerant atmosphere.”
An informational meeting for interested girls and their parents will be held on Tuesday, August 16th at 6:00 pm and on Sunday, August 21st at 1:00 pm. The informational meeting will be held at the Omaha Rollergirls’ practice facility, located at 9006-I Maple Street.
